Let’s Do An American Lament Together, It Matters Now

Justice-loving and Jesus-loving friends, the Repentance Project is now over 10 years old.  Our formational resource “An American Lament” has been being used for almost as long.  But friends, it is more timely now then it was then to take on and experience this 40 day journey of prayerful engagement with American history, and what is actually true, and God’s heart for racial justice and reconciliation.   If you haven’t done it already, please join us with the Repentance Project, Coracle, and the Racial Reconciliation Group and let’s do “An American Lament” together, gathering weekly starting February 10 through April 9.

Already by the middle of 2025, we in the United States have been living through what “is certainly the biggest rollback of civil rights since Reconstruction,” observed Mark Updegrove, CEO of the LBJ Foundation and presidential historian.  That this would be happening even after the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and after the racial reckoning of the summer of 2020 is tragic.  That this would be happening 10 years after the formation of The Repentance Project and the creation of An American Lament is discouraging.

Still, because of Jesus and our God who loves justice (Is 61.8), we are not without hope! But these recent developments mean that the resource of An American Lament matters even more now than 10 years ago.  A decade later we live in a time when our history which took so long to come to light is being put back in darkness, when stories which need to be told are being buried once again, when facts that are crucial to our mutual flourishing are being ignored, and when courageous voices for racial healing justice are being threatened and silenced.

In a time when truth is being hidden, it is all the more important to shine light on it.  Christians are a truth people, we must lead the way. Let’s do this together, starting February 10. Zoom Meeting discussions will begin on Thursday, February 19th.
