Kingdom Action Opportunity: Afghanistan & Haiti

We are all grieving the ongoing unrest and devastation affecting Afghanistan and Haiti.  Moments like these remind us that the world is broken.  And even so, there are many rallying to be the healing, redeeming presence of God in those very places of brokenness.  If you are looking for ways you might step into some Kingdom Action in these dual crises, we hope this list will be a helpful starting place:

  • World Relief offers opportunities to volunteer, advocate, and donate to both the Haitian recovery efforts and Afghan refugee relocation process.
  • Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (National) & Lutheran Social Services (DC-Area) are offering ways to help meet the needs of the Afghan refugees moving to the United States.
  • Anglican Relief and Development Fund has a dedicated disaster relief fund to get needed resources to communities on the ground in Afghanistan and Haiti as soon as possible.
  • OneHeartDC (DC-Area) just launched their “For Afghans” Initiative, being directed by one of our Spiritual Directors, Rev. Mary Gardner. It is a great resource for individuals and organizations looking for ways to help our new neighbors.

As we give of our time and resources, may we also continue to hold these fellow-image-bearers in prayer:

O merciful Father, who have taught us in your holy Word that
you do not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men:
Look with pity upon the sorrows of the people of Afghanistan and Haiti,
for whom our prayers are offered. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy,
nourish their souls with patience, comfort them with a sense of
your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them, and give
them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Book of Common Prayer)
