A new year offers opportunities to connect with Corhaven Graveyard in new ways. You’re invited to participate in upcoming events at Corhaven and in the Shenandoah Valley community. Take a look:
– Featured Films: throughout the year, look for opportunities to see newly-released movies in the local theater, as well as other race-related films at Corhaven. Our first venture will be to Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, VA, on Saturday, January 14, for a chance to see “Fences,” starring Denzel Washington, Mykelti Williamson, and Viola Davis. The showtimes have not been set that day, however, we would chose the afternoon or evening time. If you plan to attend, email Sarah Kohrs. Following the film, we’ll stop at a local coffee house for a chance to talk. Please keep in mind that you will be responsible for buying your own movie tickets.
– Book Club: Corhaven Graveyard stirs up a lot of questions for Americans concerning race, history, slavery, and more. Adults and mature teens are invited to join a book club that will work to learn and understand more concerning these issues. Our first book, “Twelve Years a Slave,” is the personal memoir of Solomon Northup, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery prior to the American Civil War. To ascertain interest and availability in setting up the book club, please fill out this Google form by January 16th. You do not need to attend every meeting and can join the club at any time. If you have questions, please contact Sarah Kohrs.
– Continued Work Days: throughout the year, consider coming to the graveyard to help the Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners with work. You would be honoring the individuals buried in the graveyard; learning more about gardening; and contributing to the sense of community that has developed at Corhaven Graveyard. Youth groups, interest groups, and individuals are welcome to help. The Director of Corhaven Graveyard can work with you to find a specific day or you can join the master gardeners during their regular work days. For more information, please contact Sarah Kohrs at CorhavenGraveyard@gmail.com.
